Hauora in Science

Planning

AIM: I want to find out how far I can sneeze.

Method:

  1. Lay the paper out as far as you want on the ground, keep in mind it needs to be about 5 meters and strait.
  2. Get a plastic cup and full it up with water.
  3. Add 10 drips of food colouring to the water per 100 ml
  4. Take a small sip of the mixture swish it around your mouth. Try and get 5 ml of the mixture.
  5. Do not swallow!
  6. Then time to sneeze. If you are unable to sneeze do a fake one.
  7. Look ahead to try and make sure not to get it on your clothes.
  8. If you get it on you try and wipe it off with a tissue
  9. Measure where your germs have gone.


Equipment:

  • Orange food colouring
  • Water
  • A big roll of butcher paper
  • Tissues
  • Cup
  • Tape or heavy rocks

The farthest my sneeze went was 1.79 meters.
The others sneezed: 
1.13 meters
2.20 meters
2.60 meters

Conclusion

I found out that spit can travel about three meters when you sneeze.

Discussion

Next I would like to find out, why do you have to close our eyes when you sneeze?

Explaining

Next time we will look after the food colouring and keep it away from others that are not in the group.

Why do we sneeze? We sneeze when a particle of dirt or something else  flies up your nose, then your next reaction is to get it out of your nose by your sneezing.

Orana Park

On Monday last week we went to Orana Park for a school trip. It was nice day the sun was shining on us. We were learning about the animals well being and where they lived. There we saw some endangered animals, there was Tigers, Sliver Back Gorillas, White Rhinos, Lions and Giraffes. It sad to think they are endangered because of us. The Gorilla's habitat is being demolished due to mines digging up a tiny pace of metal for phones. Other animals are losing their homes because of palm oil because it is use in everything from conditioner to food products, it has many different names. Here are some photos of the animals we saw.

How To Be Safe in Science

Planing

Aim: I want to find out to be safe how to be safe in science

Equipment:

  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Detergent
  • Rubber Tube
  • Safety glasses
  • Gas tap
  • Lighter


Method:

  1.  Get a big bucket
  2. Put a good squirt of detergent into the bucket
  3. Full the bucket half way with cold water
  4. If you have lose cloths take it off, pull your sleeves up and tie your hair up into a ponytail if you have long hair.
  5. Connect a tube up to the gas tap, and put the other end into the water.
  6. Turn on the gas and make some bubbles!
  7. Put your safety goggles on!
  8. Wet your hands and wrists up to your elbows
  9. Get a scoop of bubbles.
  10. Hold to bubbles away from your face.
  11. Using a lighter, ignite the bottom of the bubbles
  12. Slowly, open your hands!







Doing

Being set on fire was very scary the sudden heat burning your hands, the bright as the sun flames leaping up into the air, the terrifying black smoke lingering on the roof slowly disappears. Then as quickly as it starts if dies as you move your hands apart.






Explain

I wet my hands because fire and water do not mix so you do not burn. We roll up our sleeves to make sure not to burn our clothes. I was scared because of the adrenaline running though me as the fire started. Adrenaline is an old reaction it has been in us since we where in the stone age, the fight or fight of survival. Why don't fire burn in a circle? Fire burns upwards because the fire is made of gas and it is lighter than air and so the air pushes the fire upwards.
