30 Second Film - Editing Day 8
Today we are going finish editing. Removing background sound. We also have to add sound effects and music. We have still to decide what music we are adding as a group.
We had to re film a few scenes because our heads got cut off. Now all that we have to do is add the music and upload it to our computer and send it to the rest of the group the teacher.

Sustainability
Sustainability means providing for the humans of this generation while making sure it's still there for future generations. Some ways we do this is with conservation, maintaining an environment, habit or wildlife to make sure it will be in our future instead of becoming instinct. Carbon footprint is an example of a way we look after our environment, we keep track of the carbon dioxide and methane created by an entity.
Sustainability is important because if we are not sustainable we could lose an entire species.

Group Performances
This term we are looking at group performances. I am in a group with my fellow class mate Alex, who will be on drums and I will be on guitar. We will be doing Seven Nation Army, because it has a good beat.
The Song is about something he might have done years ago or maybe a rumour that won't go away and he wants to escape it.

Coraline: Plot
For this activity we had to create a timeline with key plot points and explain why they are important in the film.
Gymnastics Term 3
For the last three weeks we have been focusing on Gymnastics in PE.
To begin with I could do a side mount, and walking on a beam, forwards roll and backwards roll on floor. I could also do a seat drop 1/4 turn and controlled bounce on tramp, I can still jump up on to the bar. On the parallel bars I can jump up and swing, I can do a tuck jump on the small tramp.
I have improved with my bridge and can sometimes hold a proper one for a few seconds, I was able to lift one of my hands off the parallel bars and move it a few millimetres.
I would like to learn how to do a walkover.

Workshop 4: The Other Mother
Gradual change-slowly changing
Subtle-not obvious
a.
Physical- real mum, short, curved hips
Costume- long sleeves, little skin showing, pants, warm, cosy, comfortable, mum clothes.
Lighting- artificial, warm, orange
Feel- safe, happy, relaxed
Director- Shows the Coraline feels at home
b.
Physical- short, curved
Costume- long pants and sleeves, red/black, white
Lighting- warm, orange, artificial
Feel- safe, happy, relaxed
Director- Shows the other mother is changing
c.
Physical- way more pointy elbows, neck head
Costume- greys, better fitting, more skin showing, tighter, beetle shell shape on the back
Lighting- darker, artificial
Feel- sketchy, untrustworthy, off
Director- Shows the audience that something is wrong withe the other mother
d.
Physical- Pointy elbows, head, long neck, skin and bone, much taller
Costume- dark black and red, more bug like
Lighting- warm, orange, artificial
Feel- unsafe, scared, uncomfortable, intimidating
Director- Shows us that the other mother isn't perfect like Coraline thought.
e.
Physical- no skin, metal skeleton, needle fingers, extra legs, looks like a giant metal spider.
Costume- dark, rags, ripped and dirty
Lighting- artificial, dark, green
Feel- grotesque, evil, terrified/horrified
Director- Grabs attention, shows the other mother is evil and wants to steal Coraline's soul.
The theme of looks can be deceiving is shown through the gradual change of the other mother from a honey sweet woman to a vinegar sour metal spider. At the start of the film the other mother appears short, curvy and wearing the same clothes as Coraline's real mother. This makes the audience feel safe, happy and relaxed towards the other mother. The dircetor did this to show us that Coraline feels at home with the other mother in the other world. However, the other mother changes slowly throughout the film until she finally becomes a skeletal, metal spider who wants to trap Coraline in her other world. When we frist meet the other mother she is in a warm oragen light that makes her feel safe, but by the end she is surrounded by a dark and green light which makes her seem evil, grotesque and horrifying. Selick shows these changes to help the audience to be and this shoes the theme looks can be desiving.

My First Solo Performance
For my solo performance I am playing the guitar. I chose to play guitar because I don't have any prior experience with the instrument. The key board, piano and ukulele didn't interest me.
The song I am doing is Numb by Linkin Park; I'd never heard the song before and most of the other songs didn't interest me either.
I think I started my performance well, and then I lost all confidence in myself about halfway through. I tripped up all the remaining cords as my palms become a pond of sweat.
If I had to do it over again I would try and calm my self down a bit more before sitting down to play. I could maybe even make myself laugh before playing, so as to get rid of the nerviness filling the atmosphere around me.
Money
Money is a common everyday thing, but it also plays an important part of our lives. Money is connected to everything in our lives, we work for it, we spend it and we store it.

Coraline: Character Challenges
For this activity we had to use coogle to make a character web with four main characters, and write about some of the challenges they went through during the movie and their relationships with other characters in the film.
Workshop 3: Colour
Colour Palette - The colour used in the scene
Prominent - most obvious
Theme - looks can be deceiving, courage and bravery.
a. Real World Study
Cold natural light
grey, white, dull, blue
Cold, large, lonely, boring, cluttered, old, cramped, dark
Show us Coraline is unhappy there Shows us the real father is too busy to spend time with Coraline.
b.Other World Study
Yellow, vibrant, red, orange,
Orange, artificial, warm light
Happy, safe, warm, clean, perfect,
Coraline is happy there.
Show us the other father wants to spend time with Coraline.
Colour is effective in helping to create the two worlds and show the theme 'looks can be deceiving'. The real world study uses a colour palette predominantly of greys, whites and blues. This creates a cold, lonely and boring atmosphere. The directer did this to show that Coraline is unhappy in the real world and that her real father is too busy to spend time with her. The use of a cold natural light re-enforces this mood. Juxtaposed to this is the use of colour in the other world study. Vibrant reds, oranges and yellow make the room feel warm, safe and cosy. Selick used this palette to show that Coraline is happier in the other world where the other father has time for her. This shows that looks can be deceiving because Coraline mistakes the bright perfect world for a safe place when really it is a trap.

Workshop 2: Lighting
Atmosphere/Mood: They way you feel in a situation
Juxtaposed - the complete opposite
Real World Kitchen;
Outside- rainy, windy, misty, cold, miserable.
Natural light.
Cold, white light.
Small, cold, boring, sad, lonely.
Shows that Coraline doesn't like it here and is unhappy.
Wants to leave doesn't feel like home.
Other Kitchen;
Warm, orange light.
Artificial light, from bulbs.
warm, happy, cosy, welcoming, safe.
Feels like home, better home.
Feels like a family.
Coraline is happy here.
The other world is the prefect web/trap for Coraline
Cold light:
white/blue
makes you feel cold/clinical
Warm light:
Orange, yellow,
makes it feel warm / safe
In the kitchen scenes lighting is used effectively to enhance the story and shows the theme 'looks can be deceiving'. In the real world kitchen a natural cold light comes through the rainy window which creates an atmosphere of boredom, sadness and loneliness. The director did this to show us that Coraline doesn't like it here and is unhappy. Juxtaposed to this is the kitchen in the other world. It is lit by a warm, organ, artificial light that makes the space feel warm, welcoming and safe. Selick used this to show that Coraline is happy and feels at home in the other world. This help show the theme looks can be deceiving because Coraline feels safe but by the end of the film we will discover that the other world is a perfect trap designed to catch Coraline.
Juxtaposed - the complete opposite
Real World Kitchen;
Outside- rainy, windy, misty, cold, miserable.
Natural light.
Cold, white light.
Small, cold, boring, sad, lonely.
Shows that Coraline doesn't like it here and is unhappy.
Wants to leave doesn't feel like home.
Other Kitchen;
Warm light:

Coraline: Themes
For this activity my friend and I chose to discussed two of the themes in the movie, we recorded it in this blog post.
Neglect
Coralines parents neglect her and don't pay attention to her often leaving her alone for their own lives and work. As an only child Coraline didn't have any siblings to keep her company, so she annoys her parents most of the time, when they have important things to do like work. They often see Coraline as a roadblock as she often gets in their way. Growing up Coraline would have had to try to entertain herself, this shows in her love of exploring.
Versions of Reality
The differences between the other world and reality look very alike but different in some ways. For example, reality is boring and without much light. But the other world is bright and exiting. This show Coraline's perspective of the respective worlds, reality is dull because Coraline finds it dull, and the other world is bright and colourful because it's new and exiting. But by the end reality is brighter and cleaner because it is less boring, and the other world looks creeper as the truth is revealed.

Coraline Character Characteristics
For this activity we had to find two-three characteristics for Coraline and another character from the movie and write about a time in the movie that they showed this. I chose to do Other Wybie.
What am I learning?
I am learning to understand how characters are developed in film.
How does this show my learning?
This shows that I understand character traits and characteristics.
What am I wondering?
Why are some people more empathetic than others?

Māori Trading
In social studies we are looking at Pre-European New Zealand. This week we looked at Pre-European businesses. If you were generous in your trades you where seen as having lots of mana and people where more likely to trade with you. If you where greedy you where seen as having very little mana and people where less likely to trade with you. I made a mindmup to show my learning.

Tempo- the speed 'how fast'
fast - creates upeat/energy
slow - melancholy, sadder, less energy
Cords
Major - happy, uplifting
Minor - sad, sinister
Dynamics - Volume 'how loud'
Quite - Draws your attention and makes you focus
Louder - Energy/attention

Loud, fast upbeat, minor cords,
2 Coralines Dispair
Slow, minor cords starts, quite and get louder and faster, sombre,

Really slow slightly faster gets faster, minor cords, starts really quite then gets a bit louder, morose
4 Garden Scene
Gets faster and louder as it goes, minor cord, builds intensity
The beginning
Doll, lullaby, made up words suggest what? Little kids
In the opening scene music is used effectively to create a hunting atmosphere. For example, tempo, cords and dynamic's make it feel like a creepy lullaby. The tempo starts slow but gets faster building intensity. It is in the minor key which makes it feel sad. This makes the audience think the film will be mysterious, scary and creepy.

My First Solo Performance
For my solo performance I am playing the guitar. I chose to play guitar because I don't have any prior experience with the instrument. The key board and piano didn't interest me either though most of the class is doing it.
The song I am doing is Numb by Linkin Park.
Link to music video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXYiU_JCYtU
what the song is about
I'm not very nevus to perform because I have a little bit of experience performing having done the Shakespeare Festival for three years in a row with the school.
The hardest part of the song to learn is the intro because you have to go through all the cords.

Safety Signs
In CMM we are learning about what are hazards and what some of the signs you may see in a workplace or workshop.
A hazard is something that can cause serious harm or death.
The three main types of signs are the yellow triangle with is a hazard sign, blue circle with a white background which is a mandatory sign and the red circle with a white background and a line through it, showing use that it is a prohibition sign.
The hazard sign tells us that there is a hazard that can't be eliminated and to watch out for it.
The mandatory sign tells us that we have to do something or what we have to do to help minimise or isolate a hazard.
The prohibition tells us that we aren't aloud to do something because it is or may become a hazard.
My Safety Sign
Next we had to design our own sign to put around the workshop. For this activity I choose to do a sign about not going into the workshop without a teacher present. Here was the first sign I did.
This is my second go at making the sign.
PPE
Personal Protective Equipment
Ear Protection
Ear protection is used to look after your hearing.
Eye Protection
Safety glasses are used to protect your eyes. While you are drilling there is a hazard of depbreeze flying from the drill and can fling itself into your eye. There are also small particles flying around in the air.
Overalls
Overalls are used to protect your clothing from oil, chemicals and heat.
Workshop fail video.

The Guitar
The difference between an acoustic guitar and a electric guitar is that the electric guitar needs power to work but the acoustic does not.
Charlie Christian, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix.
A guitars can be used in a band or cultural group, sometimes orchestra.

The Keyboard
The difference between a keyboard and the piano is that a piano is a acoustic instrument and the keyboard is electric and the piano's keys are heaver than the keyboard. The black keys play the flats and the sharps. On the keyboard your left hand plays the cords and your right plays the melody.
I really enjoyed learning the keyboard skills because I feel like I got much better at moving my fingers form key to key.
I found it hard to move my fingers to the right keys and remembering which key I had my fingers on.
Who is Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder was born in 1950.
He was born six weeks early, with other complications causing him to become blind.
His full name is Stevland Hardaway Morris.

Betrayal
For this activity we had to pick an emotion and write about it, I chose to do betrayal. After writing down things that we thought of to do with that emotion, we used what we learnt with figurative language to write a few sentences. Here is mine.

Music and Lyrics
For this activity we had to choose a song and highlight the repeating lyrics, then underline the emotion.
Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you
Do you ever want to run away?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming
No you don't know what its like
When nothing feels alright
You don't know what its like to be like me
To be hurt, to feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one there to save you
No you don't know what its like
Welcome to my life
Do you want to be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With the big fake smiles and stupid lies
But deep inside you're bleeding
No you don't know what its like
When nothing feels alright
You don't know what its like to be like me
To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one there to save you
No you don't know what its like
Welcome to my life
No one ever lied straight to your face
And no one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I'm happy
But I'm not gonna be okay
Everybody always gave you what you wanted
You never had to work it was always there
You don't know what its like
What its like
To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one there to save you

Alliteration, Personification, Onomatopoeia & Hyperbole
Alliteration
The sun sizzled the swimmers skin.
I accidentally ate an awful apple.
Beth borrowed Barry’s books before biology.
Slipping and sliding, I stumbled in the snow and slush.
Many mysterious men mumbled messages.
The gallant goat gobbled gobs of garbage greedily.
The rapidly rising river rushed rampantly.

Similes
My bedroom was as black as a cave in the depths of the earth.

The wet ball was as slippery as an eel.
My little sister is as playful as a kitten.
