Collecting Water

Planning

Aim:

I want to find out if you can remove salt from water.

Method:

  1. Get a big bucket
  2. Full it with water and then add some salt
  3. Place a cup in the middle of the bucket, make sure that the cup rim is higher than the water level.
  4. Cover the top of the bucket with glad rap, place a rock on the glad rap in the center of the bucket over the cup.
  5. Put the bucket outside where it wont tip over and so the water can evaporate.
  6. Look at it in the next morning there should be some water in the cup and salt on the bottom of the bucket.
  7. There might still be some drops of water on the glad rap.

Equipment:

  • Water
  • Salt
  • A Bucket
  • Glad Rap
  • A Stone
  • A Cup
I think that doing this will remove at lest most of the salt from the water

Doing

Results:

The water in the beaker still tastes salty but not as bad as to originally water, over this week we made 40 ml. But we need 2 ls  to live on. Here a few photos of the experiments.

Water and cup/beaker in place

On windowsill everything in place

After one week

Discussion:

In the sun the water heated up and evaporated then condenses on the glad rap, and then the stone lets the water droplets slid into the cup. This experiment shows that you can remove clean water from salty water. This experiment is easy to put together but takes a very long time to work.

Evaluation:

On way to improve it to survive on is to have lots going at the same time, about 25 for one day for one person.
